While Lucky Bamboo are generally hardy plants, some level of care is always required for a prosperously growing plant. Refer to our guide for water bamboo and soil grown bamboo for general care tips. If not, read on for some frequently asked questions on Lucky Bamboo Care.

General Lucky Bamboo Care

1) My Lucky Bamboo’s leaves and stems are turning yellow, what should I do?

Firstly,  trim away those leaves that have turned yellow.

Then check on the following factors and rectify if applicable.

  1. The bamboos should be placed in well ventilated environment
  2. The bamboos should not be placed under strong direct sunlight
  3. Temperature should be within 20 to 30 degree Celsius
  4. There should be sufficient nutrient and water for the bamboos

2) My Bamboo’s leave and stems are still turning yellow, what should I do?Lucky Bamboo Care Yellow Leaves

If you have check the above list, and everything is in order, all you have to do it to be patient and continue to monitor the plant. It may take a few weeks for the leaves to stop turning yellow and become green again.

For newly bought bamboo, it is common for the leaves to turn yellow until the roots are grown.

If you really want thriving bamboos, grow your Lucky Bamboo in soil.

3) My Lucky Bamboo has yellow spots on its leaves and stem, what should I do?

Your bamboos are having weak immunity. Check on the following factors, and rectify if applicable.

  1. The bamboos should be placed in well ventilated environment
  2. The bamboos should not be placed under strong direct sunlight
  3. Temperature should be within 20 to 30 degree Celsius
  4. There should be sufficient nutrient and water for the bamboos

4) My Lucky Bamboo is looking weak and unhealthy, what should I do?

Make sure you give adequate nutrients to your bamboo. If you really want thriving bamboos, grow your Lucky Bamboo in soil. Check out where you can get good lucky bamboo fertilizer for your bamboos.

5) My Lucky Bamboo has outgrown its container/vase, what should I do?

Either trim your bamboos or change to a bigger size container/vase.

Newly Bought

6) My new Lucky bamboo’s roots are not growing, what should I do?

It may takes up to 2 weeks for new bamboo’s root to grow. You can put 2 rusty iron nails in the water to stimulate root growth.

7) Should I remove the wax at the end of the stem for my newly bought bamboo?Lucky Bamboo Wax

Some commercially sold lucky bamboo have their end of the stem sealed with wax. You should remove them to allow the stem to absorb water and grow roots.

8) Why are the leaves of my newly bought bamboo bend?

It is common to see bend leaves for newly bought bamboo. These leaves are typically being bent during transportation.

9) My Lucky bamboo’s roots are rotting, what should I do?

Firstly, you should cut away those stems with rotten roots. Cut the stem at a slanted angle.

Then, check on the following factors. Rectify if applicable:

  1. Check and reduce the amount of nutrient you are giving to your bamboo
  2. Change the entire water for the plant.

10) My Lucky bamboo’s roots are getting messy, can I trim them?

Avoid trimming the roots unnecessarily. If you must, avoid trimming the roots during winter. The best time to trim roots is during summer, as the roots will grow back quickly.

Water

11) How often should I change the water for my Lucky Bamboo?

You do not have to change your Lucky Bamboo water, so long the water is clear and clean. If you noticed rotten roots , change the water immediately.

12) How much water should I give my Lucky Bamboo?

As a general rule of thumb, the water level should be keep at the third to forth section of the stem, counting from bottom.

13) Can I give my Lucky Bamboo tap water?

Yes, you can. You can also shake the water a few times in a bottle before giving it to the bamboo. This will oxygenate the water and help new bamboo to grow roots faster.

 Soil Grown Bamboo

Simply plant the bamboo into soil. Do note to space out the bamboos with at least 8 cm apart for best Lucky Bamboo care.

15) My soil grown bamboos are not growing well, what should I do?

Make sure that you fertilize your soil. You may also give your bamboo plant nutrient solution.

16) My bamboo is growing slowly outdoor, especially in cold weather.

Lucky Bamboo almost stop growing when temperature drops below 10 degree celsius. One way to overcome this is to place a filament bulb beside the bamboo. The heat generated from the bulb will help with the temperature. Read our Soil Grown Bamboo Care guide for more info on this!

Lucky Bamboo Shoot

17) My Lucky Bamboo is growing shoot, can I propagate the shoot?

Yes, you can remove the shoot, and grow a new Bamboo plant from it. Make sure the shoot is grown to at least 15cm(6 inches) before your propagate the shoot.

18) Do Lucky Bamboo bears flower? and how long does it takes?

Yes, Lucky Bamboo does bear flower. However, it usually signifies that the bamboo is reaching the end of its life span. It may take more than 5 to 10 years for a Lucky Bamboo to start bearing flowers.

19) My Lucky Bamboo pagoda is dying, what should I do?

Break up the bamboos. Bamboos arranged into the form of a pagoda have poor circulation, in particular those inner ones. In additional, they tend to overcrowd and typically does not grow well.

20) How can I make my Lucky Bamboo pagoda lasts longer?single-column-bamboo-tower

An alternative is to have a simple single column pagoda. They may look less magnificent but is more sustainable.

Beside the shape, there are no difference in Lucky Bamboo care for these 2 variant. Traditional Feng Shui also does not distinguish between straight and spiral bamboos.
